Mary Jane Allen

Mary Jane Allen passed away on June 2, 2024 at the age of 80 in her hometown of Leitchfield, Kentucky.

She was born in Dayton, Ohio on January 3, 1944 and is preceded in death by her parents, Daniel “Brack and Rachel (Gilles) Allen and a sister-in-law, Judy Allen.

Mary Jane is survived by her brothers, Jim Allen and Danny Joe (Barbara) Allen and her sister, Becky (Ken) Hemberger; her daughter, Sloan Mills and is affectionately known as “Granny Snow: to her granddaughter, Lake Mills. Twelve nieces and nephews and lots of great nieces and nephews. As a kid, her father opened a theater in Caneyville, KY and named it after her, The Mary Jane Theater. As an older kid and teen, she worked and played at her parent’s popular summer season business, Allen’s Lake.

Mary Jane was a 1961 graduate of Leitchfield High School and a 1967 graduate of the University of Kentucky School of Pharmacy. She was one of only two women in her pharmacy class. Mary Jane worked as a pharmacist for over 50 years. She lived in Wasilla, Alaska for 23 years of her life and enjoyed being host and tour guide to friends and relatives that would visit during her time there. She loved it there and spoke of it endlessly.

Her life revolved around her work as a pharmacist before retiring in 2017. She enjoyed watching old movies and TV shows. She was a skilled knitter and knitted beautiful items for family and friends.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 pm until 4:00 pm on Monday, June 10, 2024, at St. Joseph Parish Hall, 204 N. Main St., Leitchfield, KY 42754. There will be a private burial following the visitation.
