Passed away on October 28, 2024, in his home with family.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rebecca (Phelps) Hughes; a daughter, Pauletta Gawarecki (James); a son, Paul David Hughes (Xaviera). He has 5 grandchildren, Matthew Gawarecki, Michelle Allen (Jacob), Kristin Meredith (Koie), Troy Hughes (Brooklyn), and Brett Hughes. He has 9 great-grandchildren, Finnley, LylahBeth, Sterling, Kylen, Royce, LuraJade, Teddy, Otis and Opie. Four brothers, Raymond Lax, Johnny Lax, Larry Lax and Ralph Lax; and one sister, JoAnn Rutter.

He was preceded in death by his father, George David Hughes; his mother, Maude S. Lax; two brothers, Clarence Hughes and Les Lax; and five sisters, Ruth Lee Hughes, Luvina (Bentsy) Workman, Jane Napper, Billie Wilson, and Betty Schafer.

We know he is in Heaven. He did not die to leave us behind but to live in our hearts forever.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm CST on Sunday, November 3, 2024, at Leitchfield Funeral Home with Bro. Wayne Clemons officiating. Burial will be in Hughes Family Cemetery. Visitation will be held from 11:00 am CST until 7:00 pm CST on Friday, 10:00 am CST until 7:00 pm CST on Saturday, and again from 10:00 am CST until service time on Sunday.
